The festive season is often filled with indulgence — from rich meals and sugary treats to late nights and celebratory drinks. But while the holidays bring joy for many, they can also take a visible toll on the skin. Breakouts, clogged pores, inflammation and dullness are common complaints as routines slip and excess becomes the norm.
According to a skincare specialist, these post-holiday flare-ups are not only expected but highly manageable — and they don’t require aggressive treatments or drastic measures.
Laura Porter, an expert facialist and founder of FAB Skincare, says she sees a surge in clients seeking help for troubled skin every January. She explains that festive overindulgence often triggers internal stress that quickly shows on the face.
“Your skin is usually the first place to reflect what’s happening inside your body,” Porter said. “Overindulgence doesn’t mean you’ve damaged your skin permanently. Most people simply need a gentle reset rather than harsh treatments or excessive cleansing, which can actually worsen the problem.”
Why the festive season triggers skin problems
Alcohol, sugar and rich foods can contribute to inflammation and dehydration, while late nights and disrupted sleep interfere with the skin’s natural repair cycle. When combined with heavier makeup and inconsistent cleansing habits, pores can easily become congested — leading to blemishes, uneven texture and a lacklustre complexion.
Porter notes that this combination of lifestyle changes creates the perfect conditions for breakouts, especially for those already prone to sensitive or acne-prone skin.
Avoid over-cleansing and aggressive products
One of the most common mistakes people make during a breakout is turning to strong cleansers, exfoliants or acids in an attempt to “dry out” spots. Porter warns this approach can be counterproductive.
“Over-cleansing and harsh acids can damage the skin barrier, increasing inflammation, sensitivity and ongoing breakouts,” she said. “Your skin needs support, not punishment. Cleanse gently twice a day and avoid products that leave your skin feeling tight or squeaky.”
A healthy skin barrier, she adds, helps regulate oil production and allows active ingredients to work more effectively.
Support skin repair overnight
Night-time is when the skin naturally shifts into repair mode, making it an ideal opportunity to support healing and hydration.
“While you sleep, your skin is more receptive to active ingredients,” Porter explained. “An effective overnight treatment can reduce redness, improve texture and help prevent lingering dark marks after blemishes heal.”
She notes that consistent overnight care can deliver visible improvements within just a few days.
Hydration plays a key role
Dehydration is another overlooked contributor to post-holiday breakouts. When skin lacks moisture, it may compensate by producing excess oil, which can clog pores and worsen congestion.
“Drinking plenty of water, cutting back on alcohol where possible, and using products that hydrate multiple layers of the skin will help restore balance,” Porter said.
Well-hydrated skin is also better equipped to heal and defend itself against further irritation.
Treat blemishes with precision
Rather than applying strong products across the entire face, Porter recommends a targeted approach to active breakouts.
“Spot treatments are far more effective when used correctly,” she said. “Apply them directly to the blemish before bed and allow them to work overnight, instead of spreading powerful ingredients onto healthy skin.”
This method helps clear congestion while reducing the risk of dryness, redness and post-inflammatory marks.
Consistency over quick fixes
Finally, Porter urges patience. Rapid changes and constant product switching can do more harm than good.
“Quick fixes rarely work,” she said. “Consistency beats intensity every time. Stick to a simple, supportive routine and give your skin time to recover. Overloading your skin or constantly changing products will only slow the healing process.”
As the new year begins, her advice remains clear: avoid extreme measures and focus on supporting the skin’s natural ability to heal.
“Your skin is incredibly resilient when treated with care,” Porter said. “A calm, targeted approach will always deliver better results than trying to undo festive indulgence overnight.”
