Research Suggests Saffron Could Help Treat Sexual Dysfunction

A small experimental study in Iran suggests that saffron supplements could help improve erectile dysfunction in men. Researchers found that taking saffron capsules twice daily for four weeks led to noticeable improvements in erectile function compared with a control group. Most other aspects of sexual function also improved, except for orgasmic function. The study was published in Herbal Medicines Journal.

Saffron, derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus flower, is one of the world’s most expensive spices due to its labor-intensive harvesting process. It has been used for centuries in cooking, traditional medicine, and as a natural dye. The spice contains several bioactive compounds—crocin, crocetin, safranal, and picrocrocin—which are believed to contribute to its potential health benefits.

In addition to culinary uses, saffron is available in capsule form as a dietary supplement. Studies suggest saffron may help improve mood, alleviate mild to moderate depression and anxiety, enhance sleep quality, reduce stress, support modest weight management, and provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

The study, led by Mohammad-Rafi Bazrafshan and colleagues, aimed to examine saffron’s effects on sexual functioning in men. Researchers note that saffron may influence sexual function by affecting neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and improving blood circulation to the genitals. Saffron and its compounds may also boost gonadotropin-releasing hormone, potentially increasing libido.

The trial included 24 men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, all over 18 and married, who were not taking other treatments for the condition. Participants were randomly divided into two groups: one received two 15 mg saffron capsules twice daily for four weeks, while the control group received no treatment. Sexual functioning—including erectile function, orgasm, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction, and overall satisfaction—was assessed before and after the study period.

Results showed improvements in all aspects of sexual functioning for the saffron group. Compared with the control group, these improvements were statistically significant in every area except orgasmic function.

“The findings of the present research indicate that saffron could affect all dimensions of erectile dysfunction. Due to the safety of this herbal medication, saffron could be consumed to support sexual health,” the study authors concluded.

While promising, the study had limitations. It was open-label, meaning participants knew whether they were receiving treatment, and the control group received no placebo. Outcomes were also self-reported, leaving room for potential bias or placebo effects.
