Expert Neurosurgeon Shares 5 Simple Habits for a Healthier Brain

Your brain, like your body, needs regular care to stay healthy. Although mental abilities naturally fade with age, simple lifestyle changes can help strengthen your brain and keep it working well. The brain adapts to your experiences, so the choices you make now influence how your mind works later in life.

Dr. Jay Jagannathan, a board-certified neurosurgeon from the Michigan Neurosurgery Institute, shares five practical ways to rebuild brain health—even if you feel you’re starting from scratch. “After years in neurosurgery, I’ve learned your brain doesn’t need perfection. It needs consistency, balance, and protection. The biggest changes come from simple habits,” Dr. Jagannathan explains.

1.Consistent Sleep Routine

Getting enough sleep is essential, but it’s just as important to stick to a regular schedule each night. Aim for six to eight hours of sleep, and try to go to bed at the same time each night—especially if you have early mornings. A real sleep routine supports long-term brain health.

2.Strength Training

Strength exercises help your body and are key to keeping your mind sharp. Dr. Jagannathan recommends doing resistance training at least two to three times a week. Even simple strength workouts can support focus, motivation, and energy, especially during long or busy days.

3.Meditation and Mind-Body Connection

Meditation offers a break from constant activity and helps build a strong link between body and mind. Simple forms of meditation or yoga calm your thoughts and create a moment of pause, which is vital for mental resilience and overall well-being.

4.Avoiding Burnout

It’s important to notice when you’re becoming exhausted and to take steps to prevent burnout. When burnout happens, your brain does not work as well, and it becomes harder to think clearly. Take breaks, set limits, and know when you need to rest.

5.Do Not Push Through Exhaustion

Ignoring exhaustion does not make you stronger. Dr. Jagannathan cautions against the mindset that celebrates working nonstop. Instead, listen to your body, prioritize rest, and make time to recover. Resting keeps your brain sharp and helps you stay focused.

Dr. Jagannathan adds, “Your brain is doing the hardest work you’ll never see. Treat it with respect—it’s how you stay sharp, stable, and able to show up for your life.”
