Scientists have developed a simple at-home strip test, similar to a pregnancy test, that can detect HMGB1, a protein closely linked to endometriosis, directly from menstrual blood. The method is discreet, highly sensitive, and could greatly speed up diagnosis for millions.

The test is designed to be as simple as a home pregnancy test. Users place a drop of menstrual blood on a narrow strip coated with borophene nanosheets. These nanosheets carry antibodies that bind specifically to HMGB1. If the protein is present, two lines appear; if not, the test shows only one line.
HMGB1 is linked to inflammation and tissue repair. Elevated levels of the protein are associated with the development and progression of endometriosis. By targeting this biomarker, the test may detect the condition earlier, even before severe symptoms appear.
What makes this approach remarkable is its sensitivity. It can detect low levels of HMGB1 that standard laboratory tests often miss.
