Fitness enthusiasts in Metro Detroit will soon have more places to break a sweat. Planet Fitness, one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing fitness chains, will open two new locations this winter, continuing its mission to make exercise more accessible and affordable.
EPIC Fitness Group, which operates more than 65 Planet Fitness gyms across Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois, announced Friday that the new clubs will open at 5640 Dixie Highway in Waterford and 3456 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit’s Harbortown neighborhood.
“Opening a new Planet Fitness is about building community and making fitness accessible, affordable, and welcoming for all,” said Mary Scott, vice president of marketing for EPIC Fitness Group. “Our goal is to remove barriers that keep people from prioritizing their health.”
The new gyms will include a wide selection of cardio and strength-training equipment, along with free small-group fitness instruction. True to the brand’s philosophy, each location will also feature Planet Fitness’s signature “Judgement Free Zone” — a concept designed to provide a comfortable environment for individuals of all fitness levels.
EPIC Fitness Group confirmed that additional openings across Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois will be announced in the coming months.

Dr. Leah Carmichael, a Detroit-based sports medicine specialist, emphasized that new fitness centers can serve as catalysts for community wellness.
“Access drives consistency. When gyms are closer to where people live or work, we see significant increases in activity levels — especially among beginners,” Carmichael said. “Planet Fitness’s inclusive model is key to sustaining those early fitness habits.”
Health Tip for Metro Detroit Residents
If you’re planning to join a gym this winter:
Start with balance: Alternate cardio (20–30 minutes) with basic strength training twice a week.
Track progress: Use wearable devices or mobile apps to monitor heart rate, calories burned, and consistency.
Prioritize recovery: Proper sleep and hydration enhance muscle recovery and prevent burnout.
