95% of Women in Menopause Lack Access to Effective Treatment

by Shreeya

Women experiencing menopause often face debilitating symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, and brain fog, which significantly impact sleep, work, and relationships. Despite hormone replacement therapy (HRT) being the most effective treatment, fewer than 5% of symptomatic women receive it.

The main barrier to treatment is a systemic lack of medical education: only about 30% of residency programs include a menopause curriculum, and just 7% of OB-GYN residents feel adequately prepared to manage menopause. This leads to many women not being properly diagnosed or offered treatment, with about 35% requiring four or more doctor visits before their symptoms are recognized as menopause-related.

Misconceptions fueled by outdated interpretations of the 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study still influence medical practice and patient fear regarding hormone therapy, despite evidence confirming HRT’s safety for healthy women under 60 or within 10 years of menopause onset. This persistent stigma has drastically reduced estrogen therapy use since the early 2000s.

Untreated menopause symptoms not only reduce quality of life short-term but also increase long-term risks such as decreased bone density, cardiovascular disease, and urinary tract infections. Experts emphasize that awareness and education can significantly improve symptom management and overall well-being.

To improve care, women are encouraged to educate themselves on menopause, seek out menopause-certified providers, keep detailed symptom logs, and advocate for treatment. Normalizing conversations around menopause will help shift healthcare systems toward better support and evidence-based care options.

Recent surveys and studies strongly call for enhanced menopause education in medical training and wider acceptance of hormone therapy to better support the millions of women undergoing this life transition.
