Anti-inflammatory Diet Reduces Pain and Supports Weight Loss

by Shreeya

A recent study highlights the powerful role diet can play in reducing chronic musculoskeletal pain and improving overall well-being. Researchers from the University of South Australia published their findings in the European Journal of Nutrition, showing that diet quality can significantly influence pain levels—even beyond weight loss.

The study followed participants over three months and found remarkable results: the prevalence of chronic musculoskeletal pain dropped from 50% to 24%. On average, participants lost about 7.1 kg, reported lower pain severity, and experienced improved quality of life.

Importantly, the researchers noted that participants who consumed higher-quality diets—rich in whole, unprocessed foods—were less likely to experience persistent musculoskeletal pain, a condition affecting millions in the U.S. and worldwide.

What an Anti-inflammatory Diet Looks Like

Foods known for their anti-inflammatory properties include:

  • Leafy greens such as spinach and kale
  • Berries, including blueberries and strawberries
  • Fatty fish like salmon and sardines
  • Nuts, including almonds and walnuts
  • Olive oil

“These ingredients can help reduce inflammation and may ease symptoms when incorporated into daily meals,” says Lily Keeling, a registered nutritionist at food delivery service Green Chef. She emphasizes that diet should complement—not replace—medical care.

Chronic Pain and Lifestyle

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting both quality of life and productivity. With growing evidence linking diet and inflammation, these findings provide hope that simple, everyday dietary changes can make a meaningful difference.
