Combining Prostate Health Markers Improves Cancer Detection

by Shreeya

A recent study has shown that combining the prostate health index (PHI) with soluble epithelial cadherin (sE-cadherin) significantly improves the detection of prostate cancer (PCa), potentially offering clinicians a more accurate tool for early diagnosis and disease monitoring.

The study analyzed 500 patients treated between 2020 and 2024, including 250 with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and 250 with PCa.

Researchers categorized PCa patients by stage (I-II: 115; III-IV: 135), presence of bone metastasis (non-metastatic: 171; metastatic: 79), and Gleason score (≤8: 136; >8: 114). Blood samples were tested for sE-cadherin using ELISA, and tPSA, fPSA, and p2PSA via chemiluminescence. PHI values were then calculated.

Results indicated that levels of sE-cadherin, tPSA, p2PSA, and PHI were significantly higher in PCa patients compared to those with BPH (P<0.05). Furthermore, these markers increased in patients with advanced-stage disease, bone metastasis, and higher Gleason scores (P<0.05).

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis revealed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.719 for sE-cadherin, 0.761 for PHI, and 0.792 for the combination of the two markers, demonstrating that the combined approach offers superior diagnostic accuracy.

The study concludes that integrating sE-cadherin with PHI could enhance prostate cancer detection, while also providing insights into disease severity, metastatic potential, and tumor aggressiveness—marking a promising advance in prostate health management.
