September marks PCOS Awareness Month, an initiative dedicated to raising understanding of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal disorder affecting women of reproductive age. The condition is characterized by irregular periods, weight gain, acne, excessive hair growth, and the formation of multiple small fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries.
While PCOS has no definitive cure, experts emphasize that lifestyle changes, particularly weight management, can significantly alleviate its symptoms. Adopting a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity are critical strategies for symptom control and overall well-being.
Weight loss is widely regarded as one of the most effective approaches, especially for overweight or obese women. Research suggests that even modest reductions in body weight—around 5% to 10%—can lead to meaningful improvements in hormonal balance and overall health.
“Polycystic ovary syndrome represents a hormonal imbalance in the majority of women. Notably, weight loss is the best treatment for PCOS, particularly for those who are overweight or obese. Even a 5% to 10% reduction in weight can rapidly alleviate symptoms and improve general health,” said Dr. Puneet Rana Arora, reproductive health expert at CIFAR, Gurugram.
How Weight Loss Alleviates PCOS Symptoms:
Reduces Insulin Resistance
Insulin resistance, common in PCOS, prevents the body from using insulin effectively, increasing androgen production in the ovaries. Weight loss enhances insulin sensitivity, lowers insulin levels, and curbs excessive androgen production.
Balances Hormones
Excess androgens contribute to acne, hirsutism, and irregular periods. Weight reduction helps normalize hormone levels, leading to more regular menstrual cycles and fewer physical symptoms.
Boosts Fertility
PCOS is a leading cause of anovulation. Achieving a healthy weight can restore ovulation and support reproductive health, improving the likelihood of conception and maintaining pregnancy.
Controls Inflammation
PCOS is linked to low-grade inflammation, which excess fat can exacerbate. Weight loss reduces inflammatory markers, enhancing overall health and lowering the risk of related complications.
Reduces Risk of Serious Health Issues
Women with PCOS face increased risks of type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension. Weight management helps minimize these long-term complications.
Why Weight Loss Works
“While medications can address PCOS symptoms, weight loss targets root causes such as insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance. It is a natural, long-term strategy that also supports mental well-being. Among diet and exercise interventions, weight management remains the most effective tool for improving life quality in women with PCOS,” Dr. Rana explained.
Maintaining a healthy weight through proper diet and regular physical activity remains a cornerstone of effective PCOS management and can even help reverse the condition over time.
