Former President Donald Trump has called on pharmaceutical companies to publicly release detailed data on the effectiveness of their Covid-19 treatments and vaccines, saying greater transparency is needed to resolve what he described as a “mess” of conflicting information.
In a post Monday on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed he had seen “extraordinary” results from Pfizer and other companies that have not been made available to the public.
“They show me GREAT numbers and results, but they don’t seem to be showing them to many others,” Trump wrote. “I want them to show them NOW, to CDC and the public, and clear up this MESS, one way or the other!!!”
Trump did not specify which drugs or data he was referring to, leaving unclear whether he meant vaccines or antiviral treatments such as Paxlovid. Pfizer, the only company he named directly, has not yet commented. The drugmaker did, however, release updated vaccine efficacy data in May, which remains publicly accessible. Moderna’s latest findings, also from May, are available through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Trump has long defended Operation Warp Speed, the public–private initiative he launched in 2020 to accelerate vaccine development. In his latest remarks, he said he hoped the program was as “brilliant” as some have claimed.
Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) echoed Trump’s demand for “radical transparency,” calling Operation Warp Speed a landmark achievement. “People who criticize President Trump’s Operation Warp Speed typically misrepresent and carefully select their facts,” Cassidy wrote on X. “We should be honest about the success of Operation Warp Speed.”
Covid vaccines remain subject to FDA approval, with manufacturers required to submit efficacy and safety data. Updated formulations are reviewed annually, similar to flu shots. The FDA’s advisory panel recently gave unanimous approval for the latest vaccine, expected to be distributed this fall.
Last week, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic, said the rollout would be limited to adults 65 and older and individuals with underlying conditions that increase the risk of severe illness. Kennedy earlier this summer dismissed the CDC’s independent vaccine advisory committee.
The administration’s handling of vaccine policy has fueled internal tensions. Former CDC director Susan Monarez was dismissed last week, prompting several senior officials to resign and sparking protests outside CDC headquarters in Atlanta.
