A leading doctor has warned men to be vigilant for a chest symptom that could signal serious health conditions, including testicular cancer, breast cancer, and liver disease.
In a video shared on TikTok, Dr. Suraj Kukadia, also known as Dr. Sooj, highlighted the potential dangers of gynecomastia—a condition in which men develop enlarged breast tissue. The condition may also cause swelling or soreness around the nipples.
While gynecomastia can sometimes be harmless, Dr. Kukadia emphasized the importance of medical evaluation. “Some men may experience gynecomastia, which is a development of breast tissue. Gynecomastia is such an important sign to be aware of because it can indicate several serious conditions, including liver disease, testicular cancer, and even breast cancer,” he said.
The NHS notes that gynecomastia is relatively common and may not always require treatment. However, it can occasionally signal other underlying health issues.
Dr. Kukadia advised men to seek medical attention if they notice any unusual changes in their chest or nipples. “It’s crucial to get checked if you notice lumps, bumps, or any changes in your breasts. A clinician can perform examinations, blood tests, and hormone assessments to determine the underlying cause and recommend the appropriate next steps,” he explained.
The NHS lists several possible causes of gynecomastia, including:
- Hormonal changes during puberty or in men over 50
- Being overweight
- Certain medications
- Conditions such as overactive thyroid, kidney disease, or liver cirrhosis
- Use of anabolic steroids or other drugs
- Exposure to pregnancy hormones in newborn boys
Medical advice suggests consulting a GP if you experience:
- Concerns about breast size or appearance
- Persistent pain in the breast or nipple
- Lumps in the breast or nipple
- Skin changes, including redness, dimpling, or rashes
- Discharge or bleeding from one or both nipples
Dr. Kukadia emphasized: “Awareness is key because early detection can make a significant difference in outcomes for conditions like breast cancer, testicular cancer, and liver disease.”
