A large-scale Swedish study has found that people with ADHD who take medication to manage their symptoms face significantly lower risks of criminal behaviour, substance abuse, accidental injuries, suicidal actions, and road accidents.
The research, which analyzed data from 150,000 individuals, offers the most robust evidence to date supporting these wider benefits of ADHD treatment.
“This is the best approach, the closest to a randomised trial,” said Zheng Chang of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, highlighting the study’s rigorous methodology.
While ADHD medications are typically prescribed to manage attention deficits and impulsivity, experts warn that parents and clinicians often overlook the broader, long-term consequences of leaving the condition untreated. Samuele Cortese from the University of Southampton in the UK emphasized, “If you don’t treat ADHD, there are risks. Now we have evidence that treatment reduces these risks.”
Previous randomised controlled trials have established the effectiveness of ADHD drugs for immediate symptom management. However, no such trials have examined the wider societal and behavioural effects.
To address this gap, Chang, Cortese, and their team used a method called target trial emulation, analyzing observational data as if it were from a randomised study.
Using Sweden’s medical and legal records, the researchers compared individuals who started ADHD medication soon after diagnosis with those who delayed treatment.
They found that medication use was associated with a 25% reduction in criminal convictions and substance-related issues, a 16% lower risk of road accidents, a 15% decrease in suicide attempts, and a 4% reduction in accidental injuries.
Adam Guastella of the University of Sydney told the Science Media Centre in the UK, “It’s always helpful to know if medications can impact daily life beyond reducing symptoms. This information is also important for policy-makers to understand the broader societal benefits of treatment, from mental health to crime reduction.”
