On July 17, the Cochlear Chengdu Hearing Industry Center welcomed Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his visit to China. Albanese toured the center’s state-of-the-art facilities and the production process of cochlear implants. He also witnessed the successful activation of the Nucleus Nexa, the world’s first smart cochlear implant system, for a Chinese user on site.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Cochlear’s entry into China. Over these three decades, Cochlear has been deeply involved in and actively promoted the exchange and cooperation in the medical and health industry between China and Australia, emerging as a model of Australian enterprises thriving in the Chinese market.
In Cochlear’s global landscape, the Chengdu center plays a pivotal role in the company’s global supply chain upgrade. Equipped with leading manufacturing techniques, intelligent production lines, and a global quality monitoring system, it ensures high-quality local production. The establishment of this center has made Cochlear a multinational enterprise with complete production capabilities in China.
Greg Bodkin, Senior Vice President of Global Supply Chain at Cochlear, stated, “China is Cochlear’s second-largest market globally, and our commitment to the Chinese market is long-term. Cochlear has already helped numerous hearing-impaired individuals in China, and we will continue to invest firmly in the Chinese market to change the lives of more such people.”
Since supporting the first cochlear implant surgery in a Chinese hospital in 1995, Cochlear has implemented a long-term localization development strategy of “sowing – planting – foresting.” Li Xinyu, General Manager of Cochlear Greater China, said, “The Chengdu center is currently the only production base outside Australia that covers the entire production chain of cochlear implant systems, embodying Cochlear’s long-term commitment to China. Over the past 30 years in China, Cochlear has been deeply involved in and vigorously promoted the development of the local hearing health cause from multiple aspects such as technology, service, talent, cooperation, and public welfare, striving to bring more benefits to Chinese society and the hearing-impaired population.”
Cochlear has continuously introduced innovative achievements to China. Relying on the pilot policies of Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone in Hainan and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it has brought cutting-edge technologies synchronized with the global market to Chinese hearing-impaired individuals. The Nucleus Nexa used in the activation ceremony witnessed by Prime Minister Albanese is Cochlear’s latest smart cochlear implant system, which was successfully activated at the Chengdu center.
To date, Cochlear has assisted over 50,000 Chinese hearing-impaired individuals in hearing rehabilitation, contributing significantly to improving their quality of life and integrating them into society.
