IVF Births Poised to Double by 2035, Experts Predict

by Shreeya

New data from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) reveals that 1 in 32 children born in the UK today are conceived via in vitro fertilization (IVF), but experts warn this is just the beginning of a sustained upward trend.

Ahead of World IVF Day on July 25, specialists at TFP Fertility forecast that IVF could become a cornerstone of mainstream family planning, with projections suggesting the rate may surge to 1 in 15 births by 2035.

Dr. Justin Chu, Medical Director at TFP Fertility Oxford, explained: “Over the next decade, we anticipate a significant rise in IVF births. This growth is fueled by shifting demographics, heightened public awareness, and dramatic improvements in success rates.

More people are also accessing treatment earlier—using frozen eggs or sperm—to gain greater control over their reproductive timelines.”

He added, “Fertility is no longer a taboo topic. More individuals are openly discussing it, planning ahead, and leveraging scientific advancements to start families.”

Key Drivers Behind the IVF Boom

TFP Fertility identifies several factors propelling the expected surge:

Rising egg freezing: As the procedure becomes more mainstream and accessible, more people are preserving fertility early for future use.

Evolving family structures: IVF is increasingly adopted by single women and same-sex couples to build families on their own terms.

Delayed parenthood: With people choosing to have children later in life, age— a major factor in fertility—drives greater reliance on IVF.

Enhanced success rates: Innovations in techniques and technology have made IVF safer and more effective than ever.

Despite growing public acceptance, access and affordability remain critical barriers. TFP Fertility is advocating for consistent NHS funding, expanded support for fertility preservation, and improved reproductive health education.

“The future of IVF holds great promise,” Dr. Chu emphasized, “but we must ensure its benefits reach all who need it, not just those who can afford it.”
