Oxytocin May Help Protect Women’s Mood During Sleep Disruptions

A new study suggests that oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” could help protect women from mood problems caused by poor sleep and hormonal changes during menopause and the postpartum period. Researchers found that women with higher levels of oxytocin before experiencing disrupted sleep had fewer mood symptoms the next day.

The research was presented at ENDO 2025, the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, by scientists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The study focused on how sleep loss and lower estrogen levels affect mood and oxytocin levels in healthy premenopausal women.

Oxytocin as a Natural Mood Buffer

Oxytocin is known for its role in bonding and emotional connection, but this study points to another possible benefit: mood protection. Dr. Irene Gonsalvez, a psychiatrist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and instructor at Harvard Medical School, explained that women with higher oxytocin levels before experiencing disrupted sleep showed fewer signs of mood disturbance afterward.

“Oxytocin appears to rise in response to stress-related sleep loss,” said Gonsalvez. “Women with higher baseline oxytocin seemed better protected against negative mood effects.”

How the Study Worked

Thirty-eight healthy premenopausal women participated in the study. Each completed two 5-night sleep programs: one with normal hormone levels and another after their estrogen levels were lowered. For the first two nights, participants had normal sleep. Then, their sleep was disrupted for three nights to mimic common sleep patterns during postpartum and menopause.

Researchers measured the women’s mood and oxytocin levels throughout the study. They found that sleep disruption increased mood problems and oxytocin levels. Importantly, women who had higher oxytocin levels before the sleep disruptions experienced fewer mood issues the next day.

Supporting Mental Health in Reproductive Transitions

Periods like postpartum and menopause bring sharp hormonal changes and frequent sleep loss, both of which can take a toll on emotional well-being. These issues are often dismissed as normal side effects of aging or new motherhood. But the new research shows these changes have a measurable biological impact—and that oxytocin may play a key role in how women cope.

“Millions of women deal with emotional challenges during reproductive changes,” Gonsalvez said. “Current treatments usually focus on antidepressants or hormone therapy. But understanding oxytocin’s role opens the door to more natural and personalized ways to support mental health.”
