For the first time, researchers have found clear biological evidence of the so-called “Monday anxiety.” This stress is not linked to whether someone is working or retired and does not appear on other days of the week. For some, this Monday-triggered stress may pose serious risks to heart health.
A team from the University of Hong Kong studied over 3,500 adults aged 50 and older. They discovered that Mondays uniquely affect the body’s stress system, leading to long-lasting problems. These problems can be tracked through cortisol levels found in hair samples, showing months of stress exposure.
Professor Tarani Chandola, from HKU’s Department of Sociology, explained that Mondays act as a “stress amplifier” in our culture. “For some older adults, the start of the week triggers a biological reaction that lasts for months. This is not just about work — it is how deeply Monday is tied to stress in the body, even after retirement,” Chandola said.
The study used data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) collected in 2012-2013. Participants reported their stress on Mondays and gave hair samples for cortisol analysis. The hair samples measured stress hormone exposure over two to three months. The researchers also considered factors like age, sex, body mass index, smoking, medication, and socioeconomic status.
Results showed that people who felt most anxious on Mondays had significantly higher cortisol levels in their hair. This increase was found regardless of whether participants were still working or retired. This means that Monday stress causes a lasting biological effect beyond just the work environment.
Previous research had linked Mondays to a rise in severe heart attacks. While these new findings are not directly connected, the biological stress shown here offers insight into how Monday anxiety could contribute to heart disease.
The cause appears to be disruption in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis. This is the body’s main stress control system, regulating cortisol release. Normally, cortisol spikes in response to stress but then returns to normal. When the HPA axis malfunctions, cortisol stays high for long periods. This can increase risks of heart disease, obesity, anxiety disorders, and cognitive problems.
Specifically, those who said they felt anxious only on Mondays had 23% higher cortisol in their hair compared to those anxious on other days. Among the group with the highest cortisol, 10% reported even stronger anxiety on Mondays.
The researchers emphasized that while many feel anxious on Mondays, only those with already high stress show this anxiety in their biology through elevated cortisol.
Earlier studies suggested higher cortisol on weekdays versus weekends but never pinpointed Mondays. Using hair cortisol, which measures long-term hormone levels, this study links Monday anxiety to excess stress hormone production rather than immediate cortisol spikes on a single day.
More research is needed to see if cortisol levels spike specifically on Mondays. Still, this study offers the first strong biological proof of Monday anxiety, especially in older adults. It also points to ways to help those with chronic stress and high cortisol, who face greater health risks.
This new understanding highlights how a common cultural experience—dreading Mondays—has deep biological roots that affect well-being over time.
