Fetal Sex Linked to Pregnancy Fatigue—Girls Tied to More Tiredness

For years, there has been a common belief that morning sickness and specific dietary preferences during pregnancy are closely linked to the sex of the unborn baby. Now, a new study published in the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity has shed some light on the connection between fetal sex and pregnancy symptoms, revealing that pregnant women carrying girls are more likely to experience fatigue.

The research was led by Dr. Amanda Mitchell from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. A team of researchers, under her guidance, tracked 80 pregnant women throughout their pregnancies. The core focus of the study was to explore how the sex of the fetus correlates with certain maternal immune markers known as cytokines. These cytokines play a crucial role in the body’s immune response, regulating inflammation and communication between cells.

After careful analysis of the data collected, the results showed that fetal sex did not have a significant impact on the levels of cytokines present in the maternal blood. However, a notable difference emerged when looking at the immune cells: women carrying girls had immune cells that produced more pro-inflammatory cytokines. Pro-inflammatory cytokines are molecules that trigger and promote inflammation in the body, which can lead to various physiological responses.

Dr. Mitchell pointed out that this key finding indicates that the immune systems of women carrying girls react more strongly to inflammation compared to those carrying boys. This heightened immune response to inflammation helps explain a previously observed phenomenon: why asthma symptoms tend to worsen more in pregnant women who are carrying girls. Asthma is a condition closely related to inflammation in the airways, and a stronger inflammatory response could exacerbate these symptoms.

Overall, the study emphasizes that the sex of the fetus may be a key factor influencing a mother’s daily immune responses during pregnancy. It provides valuable insights into the complex interactions between the developing fetus and the maternal body, opening up new avenues for understanding how pregnancy experiences can vary based on the sex of the unborn child. Future research in this area may further explore the underlying mechanisms and potential implications for maternal and fetal health.
