Doctors Warn Against Relying on Soda for Migraine Relief

by Shreeya

Millions of Americans suffer from migraines, and with limited fast-acting treatments, some turn to unconventional remedies like sipping soda for relief. But can bubbly drinks like Coke truly cure a migraine — or do they just offer a short-lived illusion?

Health experts say the answer lies in the soda’s caffeine content, not the soda itself — and even that can be a double-edged sword.

The Caffeine Factor: Why Soda Might Help — Briefly

Dr. Kay Kennis, a general practitioner and trustee for the UK-based Migraine Trust, told Fox News Digital that the key ingredient in soda potentially offering relief is caffeine.

“Caffeine in Coke can act as a nerve disruptor — a substance that affects nerve activity,” Kennis explained. “For some, that disturbance works in a positive way.”

In fact, caffeine is a common additive in some over-the-counter migraine medications. For certain people, it enhances the effect of painkillers. However, the exact reason why caffeine helps remains unclear.

Still, Kennis emphasized that caffeine can also trigger migraines in some individuals, especially if consumed in excess. “Too much caffeine can actually worsen the condition over time,” she warned.

Understanding How Caffeine Affects the Brain

Dr. Blake Livingood, a doctor of natural medicine based in North Carolina, echoed Kennis’ caution. He explained that caffeine impacts blood flow in the brain, which can sometimes ease pain.

“Caffeine can constrict blood vessels and change blood flow to the brain,” he said. “That might help if the headache is caused by dilated vessels — but it’s not a cure.”

Livingood pointed to a viral home remedy dubbed “The McMigraine,” which involves drinking Coke and eating McDonald’s fries. Why do some people swear it works?

“It’s the combination of salt, caffeine, and sugar,” he said. “Those elements can affect blood flow and electrolytes — but there are much healthier ways to achieve the same effect.”

Healthier Alternatives to Soda for Migraine Relief

Instead of reaching for soda, both Livingood and other experts recommend natural foods and drinks that offer similar benefits without the sugar and artificial additives.

“Watermelon is excellent for electrolytes and blood flow,” said Livingood. “Sprinkling a little salt on it boosts the effect — and it tastes great.”

He also recommended:

  • Organic coffee as a cleaner caffeine source
  • Nuts with sea salt for balanced minerals
  • Magnesium supplements, which have shown promise in migraine prevention
  • Mined or sea salt instead of processed table salt

Adding a pinch of quality salt to water is another way to support hydration and restore electrolyte balance, he said.

The Risks of Sugary Beverages for Migraine Sufferers

Norbert Heuser, author of Coffee Addiction & Caffeinism, urged people not to rely on soda for headache relief.

“Migraines are often tied to deeper issues like inflammation, dehydration, heavy metals, or environmental toxins,” Heuser noted. “Soda doesn’t solve those problems. In fact, the high sugar content and additives can make them worse.”

He emphasized that depending on sugary drinks may mask symptoms temporarily while potentially worsening underlying health issues.

What’s the Verdict?

While caffeine can sometimes help relieve migraine pain, soda isn’t the best source. The sugar, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives in soda may lead to more harm than good over time.

Instead, experts recommend:

  • Natural caffeine sources like black or organic coffee
  • Hydrating fruits like watermelon or cucumber
  • Foods rich in magnesium and potassium
  • Clean salts (sea or mined) to support electrolyte balance

And, importantly, consulting a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan if migraines are frequent or severe.

Summary

Drinking soda may offer temporary migraine relief due to its caffeine content, but it’s not a reliable or healthy long-term solution. Experts advise healthier alternatives such as organic coffee, magnesium, and salt-rich fruits for natural migraine management.
