A recent study from the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology shows that just 30 days of guided mindfulness meditation can significantly improve important aspects of attention—particularly how quickly and accurately people focus—regardless of their age.
This research is one of the first to use eye tracking, a precise and objective method, to measure how mindfulness training affects attention in young, middle-aged, and older adults.
According to Andy Jeesu Kim, the study’s lead author and a postdoctoral researcher at USC Leonard Davis, even short-term meditation can lead to clear improvements in cognitive function.
Why Attention Matters as We Age
As people grow older, they often experience slower reaction times and find it harder to filter out distractions. These changes are linked to the brain’s locus coeruleus–noradrenaline (LC-NA) system, which is essential for attention, alertness, and memory.
Earlier research from USC, including work by Professor Mara Mather, who co-led this study, has connected age-related decline in this system to early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
Previous studies suggest mindfulness meditation can activate brain areas involved in attention and potentially boost the LC-NA system. However, this study is the first to use eye-tracking technology to objectively assess how mindfulness affects attention across different age groups.
The Study: Mindfulness Meditation vs. Audiobook Listening
The study involved 69 adults divided into three age groups: young adults (18–30), middle-aged adults (50–65), and older adults (65–80). Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups:
Practicing mindfulness meditation via the Headspace app for 10–15 minutes daily over 30 days
Listening to an audiobook for the same duration as a control activity
Each participant visited the lab three times and completed two eye-tracking tasks designed to measure their speed and accuracy in focusing attention while ignoring distractions.
Key Results: Faster Focus and Better Control
After the mindfulness program, participants showed clear improvements in several key attention skills:
Quicker reaction times: They moved their eyes faster to find target shapes, indicating more efficient visual processing.
Enhanced goal-directed focus: Their eye movements were more direct toward relevant targets, and they resisted distractions better.
Less distractibility: Participants were less likely to focus on irrelevant but visually striking items during tasks.
Surprisingly, the benefits were consistent across all age groups. “We expected older adults to show the greatest gains, but mindfulness improved attention equally among young, middle-aged, and older adults,” Kim noted. This suggests mindfulness meditation is beneficial at any stage of life.
Interestingly, these attention improvements were not reflected in participants’ self-reported mindfulness levels, highlighting the importance of objective measures like eye tracking.
Mindfulness: A Practical Tool for Everyday Focus
While mindfulness is well-known for reducing stress and improving emotional health, this study provides strong evidence of its cognitive advantages, especially in controlling attention—a skill vital for activities such as driving, reading, and social interaction.
The study also found that while audiobook listening offered some improvements, mindfulness meditation led to faster and more significant gains in attention, particularly reaction speed.
Coclusion
Researchers emphasize the need for future studies to investigate whether longer or more intense mindfulness training could deliver even greater benefits, especially for older adults at risk of cognitive decline.
Kim commented, “Digital mindfulness tools are simple, affordable, and accessible ways to support brain health. The key to success is regular practice.”
