Supplement Found to Slow Ageing by Mimicking Exercise Benefits, Scientists Say

by Shreeya

Scientists have identified a low-cost supplement that may deliver many health benefits of exercise without physical effort, potentially helping slow the ageing process.

Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University found that regular physical activity increases the production of betaine — a natural compound found in foods like beetroot, spinach, and whole grains.

Betaine acts as a molecular messenger in the body, reducing inflammation, improving metabolism, and slowing ageing. This discovery suggests that betaine supplements, costing as little as £14.99, could be especially helpful for people who find it difficult to exercise regularly due to health or mobility issues.

The study involved 13 healthy young men who participated in a controlled experiment measuring the effects of exercise on their bodies. After 45 days of low activity, they began daily 5-kilometre runs.

Blood and stool samples taken before, immediately after, and after the training period showed the body’s initial inflammatory response was high but gradually improved with consistent exercise.

Over weeks, their bodies adapted with stronger immune systems, healthier gut microbiomes, and slower ageing markers. The exercise also led to increased betaine production in their kidneys.

Further tests in mice confirmed that betaine prevents inflammation and organ ageing by targeting an enzyme called TBK1.

This research points to betaine supplements as a promising way to replicate some key benefits of exercise, promoting better health and longevity.
