A growing trend on social media involves individuals self-injecting Innotox, often called “Korean Botox,” at home — raising serious health concerns among medical professionals.
Marie Neidert, 43, began using Botox three years ago to treat migraines but also appreciated the cosmetic benefits. After her regular medspa switched to a different neurotoxin that lasted only about two months and cost $600-700 per treatment, she discovered Innotox on TikTok.
Priced at about $210, Innotox appeared to offer similar effects at a lower cost, prompting Neidert to purchase it from an online supplier. With the supervision of an aesthetician friend, she self-injected 30 units at home and noticed results within days.
Kelly Keene, 41, also started self-injecting Innotox after watching others on TikTok. Despite anxiety and fears about safety, she began injecting the top part of her face herself, finding satisfactory results. Both women exemplify a larger movement of people turning to unregulated cosmetic products bought online and administered without professional oversight.
Health experts are alarmed by this trend. Molly O’Rourke, a registered nurse and injector, emphasizes that botulinum toxin injections require precise knowledge of facial anatomy to avoid serious complications. She warns that incorrect injections can cause muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, infections, or permanent damage.
Videos on social media show users injecting near critical areas like the thyroid and muscles involved in breathing — a practice O’Rourke finds “really frightening.”
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry echoes these concerns, describing self-injections as “terrifying” and pointing to cases where unregulated filler injections caused infections and lumps. Dr. Evan Rieder, a dermatologist and psychiatrist, highlights the risks of unknown product origins, counterfeit toxins, and the lack of sterile conditions when products are bought from unauthorized online sellers.
Innotox is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has taken enforcement actions against illegal sales but cannot fully control third-party distribution. The manufacturer, Medytox, states that they only sell to authorized medical professionals and do not endorse consumer self-injection.
Botulinum toxin, the active ingredient in Botox and Innotox, works by temporarily paralyzing muscles to reduce wrinkles or treat medical conditions. However, successful treatment depends on precise dosing, injection location, and patient factors like allergies and medications — expertise that cannot be gained from online tutorials.
Besides health risks, improper storage and contamination are concerns with unregulated products. Unlike U.S. neurotoxins that are supplied as powder and diluted by experts, Innotox comes pre-mixed, which some view as convenient but experts warn can increase risk if not handled correctly.
Cost often drives people to self-inject, as professional Botox treatments can cost hundreds of dollars every few months. But experts caution that attempting to save money by using cheap, unregulated products can lead to far greater expenses if complications arise and corrective treatment is needed.
Consumers are urged to avoid purchasing botulinum toxin products online and injecting themselves. Instead, they should consult licensed healthcare providers for safe and effective cosmetic or medical treatments. The FDA recommends verifying drug sources and reporting suspicious websites selling unapproved pharmaceuticals.
While the allure of quick, inexpensive cosmetic fixes via social media is strong, health professionals agree: self-injecting neurotoxins without proper medical training is a dangerous gamble with potentially lasting consequences.
