Aging-Related Inflammation Varies Globally: New Study Challenges Universal Aging Beliefs

A groundbreaking study from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health reveals that aging-related inflammation—commonly known as “inflammaging”—is not a universal phenomenon across human populations. This discovery challenges long-held assumptions that chronic, low-grade inflammation naturally increases with age in all humans.

The research team analyzed immune data from four distinct populations: two industrialized groups (Italy’s InCHIANTI study and Singapore’s Longitudinal Aging Study) and two Indigenous, non-industrialized groups (the Tsimane of the Bolivian Amazon and the Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia).

While the industrialized populations showed clear signs of inflammaging associated with age and chronic diseases like kidney disease, the Indigenous groups displayed a very different pattern.

In the Indigenous populations, inflammation was primarily driven by ongoing infections rather than aging itself. Despite high levels of inflammation, especially among the Tsimane, these did not increase with age nor lead to common chronic diseases prevalent in industrialized societies, such as diabetes, heart disease, or Alzheimer’s.

Lead author Dr. Alan Cohen emphasizes that inflammation is highly context-dependent. “Inflammation may not be inherently bad,” he explains. “In Indigenous populations, persistent inflammation reflects immune responses to infections, not aging.

This suggests that the harmful effects of inflammaging seen in industrialized countries may stem from environmental and lifestyle factors rather than aging alone.”
