Watching Dog Videos May Help Reduce Anxiety, Research Finds

by Shreeya

In today’s fast-paced world, stress and anxiety affect millions, and many are searching for simple, effective ways to find relief.

While therapy dogs have long been recognized for their calming presence, not everyone has access to a real-life canine companion. A recent study suggests that watching short therapy dog videos could be a powerful alternative to ease anxiety.

The Study and Its Purpose

Therapy dogs have been proven to reduce stress in various settings—from students preparing for exams to individuals coping with PTSD or children undergoing medical treatment.

With the rise of virtual healthcare and online mental health resources, researchers wanted to explore if watching videos of therapy dogs could provide similar emotional benefits.

The study involved 1,000 participants, including both students and non-students. Before and after watching a brief, five-minute video featuring a therapy dog and its handler, participants rated their stress levels on a five-point scale.

The video was carefully designed to mimic real therapy dog sessions: it included a welcome from the handler, a land acknowledgment, and meditative prompts asking viewers to reflect on their wellbeing while imagining petting the dog.

Significant Reduction in Stress Levels

Results showed a marked decrease in stress for both groups. Students’ average stress scores dropped from 3.33 to 2.53, while non-students’ scores fell from 3.07 to 2.43.

Women tended to experience a greater reduction, starting with higher stress levels but ending at similar levels to men. No significant differences were observed across different age groups.

Why Virtual Dog Therapy Matters

This virtual approach may especially benefit people who feel anxious about in-person interactions or do not have access to therapy animals. One student in the study shared, “I’ve thought about attending in-person dog therapy sessions before, but interacting with humans made me anxious. This virtual dog session removes that barrier.”

The short duration of the videos — just five minutes — also makes them an easy way to take a mindful break during a busy day. Researchers believe these virtual sessions could make mental health support more accessible, non-threatening, and cost-effective.

Christine Y. Tardif-Williams, the lead author, commented, “Virtual canine-assisted interventions hold great potential to provide emotional comfort and well-being resources to a broad audience, especially those who might otherwise avoid therapy.”

Practical Tips for Stress Relief

If anxiety builds up, try taking a few minutes to watch calming animal videos or engage in brief mindfulness exercises. Incorporating small breaks like this into your daily routine can boost mood and reduce stress.
