Shanghai, China, has unveiled an ambitious tourism development plan that aims to transform the city’s skyline and cultural landscape. The municipal government announced that nearly 4 billion yuan (approximately USD 585 million) will be invested in five major cultural and tourism projects to strengthen Shanghai’s position as a leading global destination.
The initiative will focus on constructing landmark attractions along key urban waterfronts and cultural zones. These investments are part of Shanghai’s three-year action plan to promote high-quality tourism growth and reinforce the city’s role as China’s premier gateway for international visitors.
A centerpiece of the development is Shanghai Gate, the world’s tallest spokeless Ferris wheel, approved by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism. Located in the Baoshan District waterfront, the 228-meter high capsule wheel will surpass current records and enhance Shanghai’s global attraction portfolio. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
The Ferris wheel’s innovative capsule-style design will provide panoramic views of Shanghai’s iconic skyline and the Huangpu River. As a focal point of urban and tourism planning, Shanghai Gate is expected to deliver a world-class visitor experience and strengthen the city’s competitiveness in the global tourism market.
Officials emphasized that the tourism initiative will not only boost Shanghai’s international appeal but also integrate cultural, leisure, and urban planning strategies.
