Beijing, China’s capital, saw a significant boost in tourism during the five-day May Day holiday in 2026. According to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, the city welcomed 18.83 million visitors, marking a 5.1% increase from the previous year.
The rise underscores Beijing’s revival as a top global tourist destination.
Tourism revenue for the holiday period reached 22.36 billion yuan (approximately 3.26 billion U.S. dollars), a 6.6% increase year-on-year. The surge in inbound tourism was particularly notable, with 128,000 international visitors, a 22.3% increase from 2025. Spending by foreign tourists reached 1.38 billion yuan, highlighting the growing role of Beijing’s tourism sector in the global economy.
A key driver of this growth was Beijing’s diverse cultural and tourism offerings. Over 2,000 events were organized during the holiday, including artistic performances, scenic tours, and scientific excursions. These activities provided immersive experiences blending history, art, and local culture, attracting visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
Cultural performances played a particularly important role in the city’s tourism boom. Beijing hosted 1,684 performances across 332 events, generating approximately 260 million yuan in box office revenue. These figures illustrate the strong economic impact of cultural tourism and the increasing appeal of artistic entertainment for both domestic and international visitors.
Beijing’s success during the May Day holiday reflects a broader trend toward experiential tourism.
