2027 Mercedes-Benz EQS Debuts with 800V Charging, Extended Range, and AI-Powered Tech

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the updated 2027 EQS, introducing a wide range of hardware and software upgrades aimed at strengthening its flagship electric sedan’s position in the increasingly competitive luxury EV market.

One of the most significant changes is the shift to an 800-volt electrical architecture, replacing the outgoing 400-volt system that had drawn criticism for slower charging performance. The new setup enables DC fast charging at speeds of up to 350 kW on compatible infrastructure, while maintaining support for 175 kW charging on existing 400-volt networks. According to Mercedes, the upgrade reduces charging times and enhances long-distance usability. Regenerative braking performance has also been improved, now capable of reaching up to 385 kW.

While the EQS continues to be built on the brand’s MEA platform, it now incorporates elements from the upcoming MB.EA architecture, which will underpin future electric models such as next-generation GLC and C-Class vehicles. These enhancements include newly developed electric drive units and a rear-mounted motor paired with a two-speed transaxle, designed to boost efficiency, acceleration, and high-speed performance.

The battery system has also been refined with updated chemistry, featuring silicon-oxide and graphite anodes along with reduced cobalt content. This allows energy density to increase without expanding the battery’s physical size, raising capacity from 118 kWh to 122 kWh. As a result, the EQS is expected to deliver a WLTP range of between 544 and 575 miles, depending on the variant.

A notable technological addition is the availability of steer-by-wire, making Mercedes-Benz the first German automaker to introduce a production vehicle without a mechanical steering shaft backup. The system uses a yoke-style steering interface with up to 170 degrees of rotation, eliminating the need for traditional hand-over-hand steering. For those who prefer a conventional setup, an electromechanical steering system with a standard round wheel remains available.

Exterior updates are relatively subtle, with the EQS retaining its streamlined design while adding revised hood contours, updated AMG Line grille detailing, illuminated star accents, and enhanced Digital Light headlamps. Mercedes says the upgraded lighting system improves visibility while reducing energy consumption by up to 50%.

Inside, the EQS adopts the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), featuring an upgraded MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by multiple AI platforms, including Google Gemini and ChatGPT. The navigation system now incorporates AI-driven route planning that considers terrain, weather, traffic, and wind conditions to optimize energy efficiency and charging strategies.

Further interior enhancements include heated front seatbelts, larger 13.1-inch rear entertainment displays with integrated HD cameras for video conferencing, and expanded over-the-air update capabilities. Driver assistance systems have also been upgraded, offering improved automated parking, reverse maneuver memory of up to 500 feet, and predictive suspension adjustments using shared road-condition data from other Mercedes vehicles.

The 2027 EQS will be available in 450+, 500 4Matic, and 580 4Matic variants, with pricing expected to range from $105,000 to $127,000. Sales are scheduled to begin in September 2026.

With these updates, Mercedes-Benz is reinforcing the EQS’s position in the premium electric sedan segment, where it competes with rivals such as the Lucid Air and BMW i7, both known for pushing the boundaries of range, performance, and in-car technology.
