Chevrolet is reportedly planning to revive the Camaro for the 2028 model year, marking the return of one of America’s most recognizable muscle cars after a brief absence. The move would reestablish the Camaro’s position in a segment currently led by rivals such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.
According to industry sources, the next-generation Camaro will retain its performance-focused identity, continuing as a rear-wheel-drive coupe built on an updated architecture. Chevrolet is expected to maintain a lineup of internal combustion engines, with a V-8 option remaining central to the model’s appeal, underscoring the brand’s commitment to traditional performance enthusiasts.
At launch, the Camaro is likely to be offered as a two-door coupe. However, the automaker is reportedly evaluating additional configurations, including a potential four-door variant similar in concept to the latest Charger. Regardless of body style, the model is expected to feature a 2+2 seating layout, with compact rear seats designed primarily for occasional use.
In terms of design, the new Camaro is rumored to adopt a more pronounced fastback silhouette, highlighted by a sloping roofline and a hatchback-style rear. The styling is expected to combine heritage-inspired elements with modern aerodynamic refinements, creating a contemporary yet recognizable look.
The planned revival follows General Motors’ decision to discontinue the Camaro after the 2024 model year, leaving a gap in Chevrolet’s lineup within the affordable performance coupe category. With the Corvette positioned at a significantly higher price point, the Camaro’s return would reintroduce a more accessible sports car offering.
Underpinning the new model is expected to be an updated version of GM’s Alpha platform, often referred to as Alpha 2. The architecture currently supports vehicles such as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 and is anticipated to continue as the foundation for future rear-wheel-drive models. While earlier speculation pointed to an all-new platform, recent reports suggest GM will instead refine its existing structure.
Rear-wheel drive is expected to remain standard, with all-wheel drive potentially available on select variants to enhance traction and broaden market appeal, particularly in colder climates.
The engine lineup is likely to begin with a turbocharged four-cylinder unit, possibly derived from GM’s 2.7-liter engine used in other Alpha-based vehicles. Higher-performance versions are expected to feature V-8 power, including the possibility of a new 6.7-liter LS6 small-block engine delivering more than 500 horsepower. Performance-oriented trims similar to the SS and ZL1 are also anticipated, with some variants potentially incorporating technology influenced by the Corvette.
Transmission options are expected to include a 10-speed automatic gearbox, while a six-speed manual remains under consideration amid sustained demand from driving enthusiasts. Chevrolet is unlikely to reintroduce a V-6 engine as part of efforts to simplify the powertrain lineup.
Despite the automotive industry’s broader shift toward electrification, current indications suggest that an all-electric Camaro is not part of Chevrolet’s immediate strategy. Instead, the company appears set to continue focusing on gasoline-powered performance models, reflecting mixed consumer sentiment toward electric muscle cars.
Once reintroduced, the Camaro will compete not only with established rivals like the Mustang and Charger but also with performance-oriented coupes such as the Nissan Z and BMW M2. Its success will likely depend on Chevrolet’s ability to balance performance, design, and pricing in a segment that is becoming increasingly specialized.
Production is expected to begin at General Motors’ Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan in late 2027, with a market launch targeted for 2028. Entry-level pricing is projected to start at approximately $40,000, while V-8 variants are expected to exceed $50,000.
