Chevrolet is reportedly preparing to revive the Camaro for the 2028 model year, bringing the iconic nameplate back after a short hiatus and reestablishing its presence in the American muscle car segment alongside competitors such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.
According to industry sources, the next-generation Camaro will stay true to its performance roots, continuing as a rear-wheel-drive coupe while incorporating an updated architecture and revised internal combustion engine lineup. A V-8 engine is expected to remain a key part of the offering, signaling Chevrolet’s ongoing commitment to traditional performance enthusiasts.
The model is expected to debut initially as a two-door coupe, though Chevrolet is said to be exploring additional body styles. Among the possibilities under consideration is a four-door variant, similar in concept to the latest Dodge Charger. Regardless of configuration, the Camaro is likely to retain a 2+2 seating layout, with compact rear seats intended for occasional use.
Design-wise, the upcoming Camaro is rumored to adopt a more pronounced fastback profile, characterized by a sloping roofline and a hatchback-style rear. The styling is expected to blend cues from earlier generations with modern aerodynamic elements, creating a more contemporary yet recognizable look.
The revival follows General Motors’ decision to discontinue the Camaro after the 2024 model year, a move that left Chevrolet without a direct contender in the affordable performance coupe segment. With the Corvette positioned at a significantly higher price point, the Camaro’s return would reintroduce a more accessible sports car option within the brand’s lineup.
Under the skin, the new Camaro is expected to ride on an updated version of GM’s Alpha platform, often referred to as Alpha 2. This architecture currently underpins models such as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 and is likely to continue serving as a foundation for future rear-wheel-drive vehicles. While earlier reports suggested an entirely new platform, recent information indicates GM will instead refine the existing structure.
Rear-wheel drive is expected to remain standard, with all-wheel drive potentially offered on select variants to improve traction and expand appeal in colder regions.
The engine range is likely to begin with a turbocharged four-cylinder unit, potentially derived from GM’s 2.7-liter engine already used in other Alpha-based models. Higher-performance variants are expected to feature V-8 power, possibly including a new 6.7-liter LS6 small-block engine producing more than 500 horsepower. Performance-focused trims akin to the SS and ZL1 are also anticipated, with some models potentially incorporating technology derived from the Corvette.

When it returns, the Camaro will face competition not only from traditional rivals like the Mustang and Charger but also from performance-oriented coupes such as the Nissan Z and BMW M2. Production is expected to begin at General Motors’ Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan in late 2027, ahead of a planned market launch in 2028. Pricing is projected to start at around $40,000 for entry-level models, with V-8 variants likely exceeding $50,000.
