Chevrolet is reportedly planning to bring back the Camaro for the 2028 model year, reviving the iconic nameplate after a brief hiatus and reintroducing it into the American muscle car segment alongside rivals such as the Ford Mustang and Dodge Charger.
According to industry reports, the next-generation Camaro will retain its core identity as a rear-wheel-drive performance coupe while benefiting from updated architecture and a revised lineup of internal-combustion engines. A V-8 option is expected to remain part of the offering, underscoring Chevrolet’s continued commitment to traditional performance.
At launch, the revived Camaro is likely to debut as a two-door coupe, though the automaker is reportedly considering expanding the range. One possibility under evaluation is a four-door variant, similar in concept to the latest Dodge Charger. Regardless of body style, the model is expected to maintain its 2+2 seating configuration, with compact rear seats designed primarily for occasional use.
In terms of design, the new Camaro is rumored to adopt a more pronounced fastback silhouette, featuring a sloping roofline and a hatchback-style rear. The styling is expected to draw inspiration from earlier generations while incorporating modern aerodynamic elements.
The Camaro’s return would follow General Motors’ decision to discontinue the model after the 2024 model year, leaving Chevrolet without a direct competitor in the affordable performance coupe segment. With the Corvette positioned at a significantly higher price point, the Camaro’s revival would restore a more accessible sports car option within the brand’s portfolio.
Underpinning the next-generation model is expected to be an updated version of GM’s Alpha platform, often referred to as Alpha 2. This architecture currently supports vehicles such as the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 and is likely to serve as the foundation for future models across GM’s portfolio. While earlier speculation pointed to an all-new rear-wheel-drive platform, recent reports suggest the automaker will instead refine the existing structure.
Rear-wheel drive is expected to remain standard, with all-wheel drive potentially offered on select variants to enhance traction and broaden appeal in colder markets.
The engine lineup is anticipated to start with a turbocharged four-cylinder unit, possibly based on GM’s 2.7-liter engine already used in other Alpha-based vehicles. Higher-performance trims are expected to feature V-8 power, potentially including a new 6.7-liter LS6 small-block engine projected to deliver more than 500 horsepower. Successors to performance-focused variants such as the SS and ZL1 are also expected, with some models potentially drawing on Corvette-derived technology.
Transmission options are likely to include a 10-speed automatic, while a six-speed manual remains under consideration due to continued demand from driving enthusiasts. Chevrolet is not expected to reintroduce a V-6 engine, as it aims to streamline the powertrain lineup.
Despite the broader industry shift toward electrification, an all-electric Camaro does not appear to be part of Chevrolet’s current plans. Instead, GM is expected to continue focusing on gasoline-powered performance in this segment, reflecting mixed consumer reception to electric muscle cars.
Once it returns, the Camaro will compete not only with traditional rivals like the Mustang and Charger but also with performance-oriented coupes such as the Nissan Z and BMW M2. Its success will likely hinge on Chevrolet’s ability to balance performance, design, and pricing in a segment that has become increasingly specialized.
Production is expected to begin at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan in late 2027, ahead of its planned 2028 market launch. Pricing is projected to start at around $40,000 for entry-level models, with V-8 variants likely exceeding $50,000.
