Hyundai Teases China-Exclusive IONIQ EV Lineup Ahead of Beijing Debut to Challenge BYD

by Shreeya

Hyundai has provided an early real-world preview of its upcoming China-focused IONIQ electric vehicle lineup, signaling a stronger push into the world’s largest EV market as it prepares to take on dominant local players such as BYD.

The preview follows the recent unveiling of two concept models in Beijing — the IONIQ Earth and IONIQ Venus — which mark the first entries under a new EV strategy tailored specifically for Chinese consumers. The Earth is positioned as a practical family SUV, while the Venus is aimed at younger, tech-savvy buyers as a stylish and forward-looking sedan.

Production versions of both models are scheduled to make their official debut at the Beijing Auto Show on April 24. Hyundai is also expected to use the event to outline its broader electrification roadmap for China. According to Beijing Hyundai president Li Fenggang, the new vehicles will feature “smart driving and smart cabin experiences” designed to meet local market expectations.

In a departure from Hyundai’s global IONIQ lineup — including models such as the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 9 — the China-exclusive vehicles adopt a distinct design language guided by the brand’s “Lead, don’t follow” philosophy. This new approach emphasizes a “single-curve silhouette,” setting them apart visually from existing global offerings.

Shortly after the concepts were revealed, a camouflaged prototype of the Venus sedan was spotted undergoing road testing, offering an early look at the production model. Despite the disguise, the vehicle appears to retain many of the concept’s design elements, including slim LED headlights linked by a full-width light bar that enhances its futuristic styling.

Hyundai has also confirmed that its new China-market IONIQ vehicles will adopt a planetary naming system, reflecting a design philosophy centered on the driver experience.

The upcoming models are expected to be equipped with Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect system, an Android-based platform designed to deliver advanced connectivity and a smartphone-like user interface. This system is likely to place Hyundai in direct competition with leading in-car infotainment technologies already popular in China’s EV sector.

More details about the Earth and Venus production models will be disclosed during Hyundai’s official press conference at the Beijing Auto Show, where the company will present its strategy for expanding its presence in China’s increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
