New Kia Midsize Pickup Truck to Rival Toyota Tacoma in U.S., Launching Before 2030

Kia has announced plans to introduce a new midsize pickup truck designed specifically for the U.S. market by 2030. The South Korean automaker revealed this development during its recent Investor Day event, highlighting the vehicle as a key part of its growth strategy in North America. The upcoming truck will be built on a new body-on-frame platform shared with Hyundai’s forthcoming midsize pickup, the Boulder, and is expected to offer a range of powertrains including gasoline, hybrid, and extended-range electric variants.

This new pickup aims to compete in the highly competitive midsize truck segment, which includes popular models like the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, and Chevrolet Colorado. Kia’s CEO Ho Sung Song emphasized that the truck would target an “untapped” market by combining rugged off-road capabilities with multiple powertrain options. A concept image shown during the presentation depicted a tough design with features such as heavy cladding, high ground clearance, and skid plates, signaling serious off-road intent.

Kia plans to produce around 90,000 units annually in North America and aims to capture roughly 7% of the midsize pickup market by 2034. This effort aligns with Kia’s broader goal of increasing its annual U.S. vehicle sales to over one million by 2030, up from about 850,000 last year. To support this growth, Kia and its parent company Hyundai Motor Group are expanding production capacity in the United States, including possible new factory investments.

The new platform underpinning Kia’s pickup will be versatile enough to support various light trucks and SUVs across Hyundai Motor Group brands, including Genesis and Hyundai itself. While there was some initial speculation about a fully electric version of the truck, official information clarifies that hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) will be offered instead. This approach allows Kia to balance performance and efficiency while appealing to a broad range of consumers.

In addition to the pickup launch, Kia also revealed plans to introduce a global flagship electric SUV by 2029 as part of its expanding electric vehicle lineup. The automaker aims to increase its hybrid offerings from four to eight models and expects to sell over one million EVs annually worldwide by 2030. These moves reflect Kia’s commitment to electrification alongside traditional combustion engines.

Kia’s entry into the midsize pickup segment marks a significant step as it seeks to diversify its product portfolio in the United States. Currently known for models like the Seltos and Telluride SUVs, Kia will now challenge established pickup leaders with a rugged and technologically advanced truck designed for both urban and off-road use. The launch timeline suggests consumers can expect to see this new vehicle in showrooms well before 2030 if production ramps up smoothly.

Overall, Kia’s midsize pickup truck is positioned to be a competitive offering that combines durability, versatility, and multiple powertrain choices. With growing interest in electrified trucks and SUVs, Kia’s strategic investment in this segment could help boost its presence in one of America’s most important automotive markets.
