BMW has introduced a groundbreaking hydrogen tank system in its latest iX5 Hydrogen model, marking a significant advancement in fuel cell technology. The new hydrogen storage design enhances driving range, safety, and space efficiency, showcasing BMW’s commitment to diverse and sustainable mobility solutions.
The centerpiece of this innovation is the BMW Hydrogen Flat Storage system, which arranges seven high-pressure tanks made from carbon-fiber reinforced composite into a single integrated unit. This unique design replaces traditional individual pressure vessels with multiple chambers connected in parallel, controlled by one central valve. This configuration allows the iX5 Hydrogen to store at least seven kilograms of hydrogen, enabling a driving range of up to 750 kilometers (about 385 miles) on a single fill.
Refueling the hydrogen tanks is fast and convenient, taking less than five minutes from empty to full. The tanks operate at a pressure of 700 bar and are protected by the vehicle’s structure to enhance mechanical safety. BMW’s engineers have carefully integrated this system into the new X5 without sacrificing interior cabin space, thanks to the flat and compact design of the storage unit.
Dr. Joachim Post, BMW’s Board Member responsible for Development, described the installation process as “installation Tetris,” emphasizing how the new hydrogen drive system fits precisely within the X5’s architecture. This clever engineering allows BMW to manufacture different drivetrain variants—including battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, conventional combustion engines, and hydrogen fuel cells—on the same production line. This flexibility helps optimize production costs and technical complexity while meeting diverse customer needs.
The new iX5 Hydrogen also benefits from BMW’s latest drivetrain technologies, including the Gen3 fuel cell system that offers improved efficiency and power compared to previous generations. It features BMW’s Heart of Joy drivetrain software and Dynamic Performance Control for enhanced driving dynamics. This combination ensures that customers experience the driving pleasure BMW is known for while enjoying the environmental benefits of hydrogen fuel.
BMW’s broader hydrogen strategy reflects a technology-open approach that supports a variety of clean energy options. Hydrogen fuel cells offer long-range electric driving with quick refueling times and reduce reliance on any single energy source or raw material supply chain. The development of this new powertrain was supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport through the “HyPowerDrive” project under the IPCEI Hy2Move initiative, with funding totaling over 270 million euros from federal and Bavarian sources.
With plans to introduce the BMW iX5 Hydrogen into production networks by 2028, BMW is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable automotive innovation. By combining advanced hydrogen storage technology with flexible manufacturing capabilities and efficient fuel cell systems, BMW aims to provide customers with versatile and environmentally friendly vehicles without compromise.
