The BMW iX3 has achieved a significant milestone by winning both the World Car of the Year and World Electric Vehicle awards at the 2026 World Car Awards ceremony held in New York. This marks a major achievement for BMW, as it is the first production model from its Neue Klasse platform to receive such recognition. The awards reflect the growing dominance of electric vehicles in the automotive industry, with all category winners powered by battery-electric drivetrains—a first in the 21-year history of the program.
The iX3 competed against notable models such as the Hyundai Palisade and Nissan Leaf for the overall title, and also beat the Mercedes-Benz CLA and Nissan Leaf for the electric vehicle award. This victory ends Hyundai Motor Group’s streak of four consecutive overall wins and brings BMW level with Audi as the manufacturer with the most wins in the history of these awards, now totaling eleven across all categories.
Since its launch, BMW’s iX3 has attracted over 50,000 orders, underlining strong market demand for vehicles built on the Neue Klasse architecture, which is central to BMW’s electric transition strategy. The company’s CEO, Oliver Zipse, was also honored at the event as World Car Person of the Year for his leadership during what was described as “the most turbulent of times” in the automotive sector.
Other notable winners included Lucid’s Gravity SUV, which took home the World Luxury Car title. Despite a recent recall affecting about 5,000 units for physical repairs, Lucid remains optimistic as it prepares to release its first-quarter production and delivery numbers. Lucid’s interim CEO highlighted that 80% of Gravity buyers are new to the brand, signaling expanding market interest.
Nio’s Firefly sub-brand was awarded World Urban Car of the Year. Initially launched in China in April 2025 and later introduced to several European markets, Firefly’s sales surged with a reported 35,486 vehicles delivered across Nio’s brands in March—a 136% increase compared to last year. The Firefly win follows last year’s award to another Chinese brand, BYD, highlighting China’s rising influence in electric urban mobility.
Additional winners include Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 N for World Performance Car, marking back-to-back victories in this category following last year’s win by Ioniq 5 N. Mazda claimed World Car Design with its Mazda 6e model, securing its third design award and beating strong contenders like Kia and Volvo.
The World Car Awards jury consists of 98 automotive journalists from 33 countries who rigorously test and evaluate vehicles over several months. The eligibility criteria require cars to be produced in volumes exceeding 10,000 units annually and sold across at least two major markets on two continents within a specific timeframe. This process ensures a comprehensive assessment of new vehicles on a global scale.
The 2026 awards highlight an unmistakable shift towards electric mobility as all winners were battery-electric vehicles.
