Audi has unveiled a significant upgrade to its popular Q3 model by integrating Ams Osram’s cutting-edge EVIYOS HD25 pixel-based microLED lighting system. This new technology marks a major advancement in automotive lighting, offering adaptive illumination that actively communicates with the driver and the surrounding environment, thereby improving safety on the road.
The EVIYOS HD25 system consists of a high-resolution digital matrix with over 25,000 individually controllable pixels. This enables the headlights to adjust light patterns in real-time based on inputs from various sensors, vehicle movements, and external conditions. Unlike traditional lighting that merely illuminates the road, this system provides dynamic visual feedback and context-aware projections.
Among the new features are lane and orientation lights that work closely with the vehicle’s driver assistance systems. For example, the system projects warnings directly onto the road surface if there is a vehicle in the blind spot during lane changes or displays lane departure alerts. Additionally, it can project an ice warning symbol when driving at speeds above 70 kilometers per hour (43.5 miles per hour), helping drivers stay aware of potentially hazardous conditions.
The adaptive headlights also adjust automatically in construction zones by switching from lane lighting to orientation lighting. This helps drivers maintain their lane more easily in narrow or complex roadwork areas. Users can customize these lighting functions through Audi’s MMI interface, including options to deactivate certain features and select from three different coming-home or leaving-home light designs.
Combined with microLED technology, the digital Matrix LED headlights provide highly precise high-beam distribution and enhanced glare control. This precision not only improves visibility for the driver but also reduces glare for oncoming traffic, contributing to overall road safety.
Sylvia Weise, senior product manager at Ams Osram, described EVIYOS as a paradigm shift in automotive lighting — transforming it from passive illumination into active, data-driven communication. By equipping the Audi Q3 with this technology, Audi is offering compact vehicle owners premium-level safety features that were previously available mostly in larger or more expensive cars.
