BMW is expanding its lineup with new electric and internal combustion engine models, signaling a dynamic approach to the evolving automotive market. The German automaker recently teased the 2027 BMW 3 Series, alongside introducing a more affordable version of its electric iX3 SUV.
The upcoming 2027 BMW 3 Series, codenamed “G50,” was briefly shown in an official video focused on the electric i3. This new generation will feature an M Performance variant, likely called the M350, which is set to launch later this year. Unlike previous assumptions, this model is not the next M3 but a high-powered iteration of the standard 3 Series. It is expected to retain six-cylinder engines with enhancements to the turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six “B58” engine, potentially delivering over 400 horsepower.
BMW’s naming strategy is also evolving; the M350 name drops the traditional “i” suffix used for fuel injection in combustion engines, reserving that letter exclusively for electric vehicles. This change reflects BMW’s broader shift toward electrification while maintaining a strong presence in gas-powered cars. The full M3 model, codenamed “G84,” is anticipated to debut in 2028 with mild hybrid technology and possibly come exclusively with all-wheel drive and automatic transmission.
In addition to the new 3 Series, BMW unveiled a more budget-friendly version of its iX3 electric SUV called the iX3 40. This rear-wheel-drive model features a smaller 82.6-kilowatt-hour battery pack and delivers an impressive WLTP range of 395 miles (635 kilometers). Although it offers less power and slower charging compared to the higher-end xDrive 50 variant, it still provides strong performance with 315 horsepower and acceleration from zero to 62 mph in 5.9 seconds.
Priced €7,500 lower than the xDrive 50 version in Germany, the iX3 40 offers a practical balance between range, price, and performance. It sacrifices all-wheel drive for rear-wheel drive but maintains a competitive driving experience suitable for daily use. Charging capabilities are slightly reduced, with peak power at 300 kW allowing a charge from 10% to 80% in about 21 minutes.
BMW’s continued commitment to both electric and combustion engine vehicles demonstrates its strategy to cater to diverse customer preferences during this transitional period in automotive technology. With the new gas-powered 3 Series expected to hit markets by late 2026 or early 2027 and expanded electric offerings like the iX3 variants, BMW aims to strengthen its position in both segments.
