Kia America has reported its strongest first quarter sales ever, defying a general downward trend in the U.S. automotive market during early 2026. The South Korean automaker’s North American division sold a total of 207,015 vehicles from January to March, marking a four percent increase compared to the same period last year. This milestone comes amid broader market pressures, including rising fuel prices and affordability challenges that have caused many competitors to see declines.
Industry analysts have projected a drop in total new car sales in the United States for the first quarter of 2026, estimating around 3.7 million vehicles or fewer will be sold. This figure represents a decline of over six percent from the previous year. Major automakers such as General Motors, Toyota, Ford, and Hyundai are expected to experience lower sales volumes during this period. The increase in gasoline prices, driven by global tensions linked to the Gulf war, has further strained consumer spending on vehicles.
Despite these headwinds, Kia America’s performance stands out as an exception. The company not only grew its overall vehicle deliveries but also set new records in hybrid and electrified vehicle sales. Hybrid vehicle deliveries rose by 73 percent, while electrified models increased by 30 percent compared to the first quarter of 2025. Several Kia models also reached new sales highs for the quarter, including the Sportage, Carnival, and K4.
The all-new 2027 Kia Telluride was a highlight for the brand, achieving its best quarterly sales ever with a 20 percent year-over-year increase. Although availability of this flagship SUV is still expanding nationwide, it sold 35,928 units in the first quarter alone. The Sportage remained Kia’s best-selling model with 44,704 units delivered, followed by the K4 with 37,220 units. Meanwhile, aside from the EV9 and EV6 electric models—which saw declines due to the end of federal incentives—the only model experiencing a notable drop was the base Soul crossover SUV, which fell from over 11,000 units last year to just above 3,000 units this year.
Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, expressed optimism about the company’s results. He stated that strong customer demand and steady growth contributed to their record-breaking first quarter performance. Watson also highlighted positive media reception for the new Telluride and emphasized its role alongside Kia’s lineup of sedans, SUVs, and electrified vehicles in driving continued success.
Kia America’s ability to expand sales during a challenging economic environment illustrates its growing appeal among U.S. consumers. The company’s focus on hybrid and electrified technology appears to resonate well with buyers seeking fuel-efficient options amid rising gas prices. As Kia continues to roll out new models and expand availability across the country, it aims to maintain momentum through the remainder of 2026.
