Volvo Car UK has expanded its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the introduction of the EX30 Cargo, the company’s first car-derived van. Specifically designed for business and fleet customers, this new variant combines the practicality and load-carrying capabilities of a commercial vehicle with the comfort, technology, and safety features of Volvo’s passenger cars.
The EX30 Cargo is based on the Volvo EX30 compact SUV, retaining the SUV’s sleek design and electric powertrain while incorporating modifications that enhance its commercial utility. To create the cargo bay, rear passenger seats have been removed and replaced with a flat floor, alongside an access panel to the lower floor, maximizing payload to 390kg and providing a total load capacity of 1,000 liters. A specially designed bulkhead separates the cabin from the cargo area, ensuring safety and security for occupants and cargo alike. Additional modifications to the rear side panels and doors further expand usable load volume, making the vehicle highly adaptable for a variety of commercial applications.
The EX30 Cargo is offered in two main variants: the standard EX30 Cargo and the EX30 Cross Country Cargo, which features increased ground clearance for operations on rougher roads or uneven terrain. Importantly, the conversion process can be applied not only to newly ordered vehicles but also to existing stock, offering flexibility to fleet managers seeking to upgrade their current electric vehicles.
For model year 2027, Volvo plans to introduce the P3 (150hp) Extended Range powertrain, designed for customers requiring slightly lower power output than the P5 (272hp) variant, while still benefiting from an impressive electric range of up to 300 miles. This addition broadens the appeal of the EX30 Cargo for businesses that prioritize efficiency and range over high performance.
The EX30 Cargo also incorporates enhanced practical features for daily commercial use. The rear doors open wider, facilitating easier loading and unloading of goods, while an additional cargo work light ensures good visibility inside the cargo area. Furthermore, the underfloor subframe provides extra securing and mounting points, enabling a range of custom fittings for various business needs.
Jack Munford, Head of Fleet at Volvo Car UK, highlighted the rationale behind the EX30 Cargo: “While we are best known for our passenger vehicles, we recognise that business owners and fleets also want the quality, safety, and technology that Volvo is renowned for in a compact commercial vehicle too, which is why we created the extremely practical EX30 Cargo.”
In line with Volvo’s reputation, the EX30 Cargo meets stringent safety standards, undergoing comprehensive testing to ensure that all safety systems perform as intended. This ensures that both drivers and cargo receive the same high level of protection Volvo vehicles are known for.
The EX30 Cargo offers multiple powertrain options, including the P3 (150hp) and P5 (272hp) Extended Range, the standard-range P5, and the high-performance P8 (428hp) All-Wheel Drive variant for customers requiring extra power. Two trims—Core and Plus—are available, along with the Cross Country Plus trim for the Cross Country variant, allowing businesses to tailor vehicles to their specific operational requirements.
The vehicle is available now through Volvo Car UK’s fleet sales channels, with pricing starting at £36,010 OTR for the P5 standard-range model. With the EX30 Cargo, Volvo enters the commercial electric vehicle segment, offering a compact, efficient, and technologically advanced solution for businesses seeking a sustainable alternative to conventional vans.
