BMW is accelerating its transition into the Neue Klasse era with the launch of its first all-electric 3 Series, following last year’s introduction of the second-generation NA5 BMW iX3. The iX3 marked a significant step for the brand, debuting a new design language, fully redesigned interior, and a dedicated EV platform that sets it apart from previous all-electric models.
Unlike the electric i5 and i7, the BMW i3 Neue Klasse does not share its platform with the larger 5 Series or 7 Series. Instead, it rides on a purpose-built architecture similar to Hyundai’s E-GMP or Volkswagen’s MEB, enabling a range of breakthroughs. Notably, the i3 offers an estimated driving range of up to 440 miles (708 km).
The new BMW i3 50 xDrive features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivering up to 463 hp and 476 lb-ft of torque. Combined with an 800-volt fast-charging system, the i3’s performance specs are impressive. Yet, the conversation around the i3 has extended beyond numbers.
Styling has sparked particular interest, as the i3 departs from the vertical kidney grilles of the second-generation iX3. Instead, it sports wide horizontal kidneys that integrate seamlessly with LED headlights and daytime running lights. Opinions are mixed: some praise the bold aesthetic, while others find it less distinctive.
Insiders suggest BMW is intentionally distinguishing SUVs from passenger cars within the Neue Klasse era. This strategy could indicate that future models, such as the next-generation X5 or a refreshed 5 Series, may adopt a similar design approach.
Digital car artists have also embraced the Neue Klasse concept. On social media, CGI creator “Theottle” recently adapted the G60 BMW 5 Series with the i3’s Neue Klasse styling. Using a crimson 5 Series as the base, the artist overlaid the 2027 i3’s front end and adjusted details for a seamless integration. The result demonstrates BMW’s potential for a cohesive family design across its passenger cars.
While the leaked 7 Series has not adopted Neue Klasse styling, it remains to be seen whether the mid-sized 5 Series will follow suit. BMW enthusiasts and industry observers alike are watching closely to see if the Neue Klasse aesthetic will define the next generation of the brand’s lineup.
