Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the redesigned 2027 GLE and GLE Coupe by May 2026, with the U.S. rollout expected shortly after, signaling a renewed focus on both technology upgrades and regional strategy. In particular, China will receive a new long-wheelbase GLE, highlighting the SUV’s growing significance in Mercedes’ Asia operations.
The automaker confirmed that the next-generation GLE will feature a wide range of exterior, interior, and powertrain updates. These include a redesigned illuminated grille, Digital Light headlamps, updated star-motif taillights, and a slimmer MBUX Superscreen, alongside Active Ambient Lighting, an upgraded steering wheel, and advanced driver-assistance systems powered by the MB.OS software platform.
Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius emphasized the rapid pace of upcoming launches, stating, “In these next three months alone, you will see the new GLE, the new GLE Coupe, the new GLS, the new electric C-Class, the new AMG GT, alongside the VLE and Maybach S-Class.” Both GLE body styles are expected to debut publicly together, marking a major milestone in the brand’s near-term product strategy.
A key focus for Mercedes in China is the introduction of a fully localized long-wheelbase GLE. Mercedes China head Oliver Thöne noted that the current GLE remains an imported model, but by mid-2026, it will be replaced by a version designed specifically for the Chinese market. This model will incorporate the latest MB.OS software, over-the-air updates, and China-specific ADAS developed in collaboration with Momenta, tailored for complex traffic scenarios including cut-ins, pedestrian detection, and hands-off driving support.
The localization strategy also aligns with broader economic and geopolitical considerations. Mercedes CFO Harald Wilhelm confirmed that 2026 planning includes the China-localized GLE, reflecting the company’s approach to tariffs, manufacturing, and cost management.
Beyond logistics, the updated GLE and GLS are positioned to meet shifting consumer preferences in Asia. Mercedes sales chief Mathias Geisen observed that several markets are moving toward grand limousines and multi-purpose vehicles (MPVs), placing the GLE and GLS at the center of the company’s response to these trends.
In addition to comfort and spaciousness enhancements, the GLE facelift will introduce major technology upgrades, including a Burmester 4D audio system, a new PHEV variant, and a P2 strong-hybrid powertrain. Mercedes aims to extend these innovations across its product portfolio, ensuring that the GLE, GLS, and other models benefit from the latest software, infotainment, and driver-assistance advancements.
With these updates, Mercedes positions the GLE and GLS as flagship SUVs that blend luxury, technology, and regional adaptability, reinforcing the brand’s strategy in Asia while preparing for an imminent U.S. launch.
