Subaru is set to phase out key models in its Japanese lineup, including the WRX S4 STI Sport, due to tightening emission and noise regulations. According to the company’s Japanese website, order books for the all-wheel-drive sedan will close no later than May 18, 2026, though strong demand could see them shut earlier.
The announcement comes alongside news that the Levorg and Levorg-derived Layback will also be discontinued, with order-taking ending on April 13, 2026. Known as the WRX Sportswagon in Australia and the WRX GT in New Zealand, the Levorg shares its highly modular VB-generation WRX platform.
While the STI Sport grade of the WRX S4 will not return for 2027, Subaru plans a mid-cycle refresh of the Japanese model next year. It remains unclear whether the updated WRX will reach U.S. dealerships in 2027 or 2028. The Levorg is also scheduled for a facelift, and spy photos suggest hybrid assistance for its next iteration, which could be marketed as the third generation rather than a minor update.
Subaru is reportedly exploring multiple body styles for the next WRX, including a wagon based on the Levorg and a potential hatchback, the latter previewed by a concept at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show.
In Japan, the automaker appears to be discontinuing all 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four models due to local emission and noise regulations. These restrictions do not currently affect the U.S. market.
Currently, the Japanese WRX S4 lineup offers two grades, both equipped with the Subaru Performance Transmission—a CVT with paddle shifters and eight predefined ratios. The GT-H EX serves as the entry-level model, featuring 18-inch aluminum wheels and fabric sport seats with blue stitching.
The STI Sport R EX builds on the GT-H EX, adding Recaro front seats with Ultrasuede and leather upholstery, STI-tuned steering, and electronically controlled dampers. Subaru will also release the STI Sport R-Black Limited II in April 2026, distinguished by Sunrise Yellow paintwork and matching interior accents.
For enthusiasts, Subaru will continue to offer a manual-equipped WRX STI Sport#, a special edition available exclusively through a lottery system. Production will be limited to just 600 units.
As emission regulations reshape Subaru’s lineup in Japan, fans of the WRX and Levorg may need to act quickly to secure these models before their discontinuation.
