A Florida plastic surgery clinic is under investigation after a patient died during a Brazilian butt lift procedure, raising concerns about the qualifications of medical staff involved in such surgeries. The incident occurred at The Best U Now Plastic Surgery, previously known as Serenity Capital Investments, located in Plantation, Florida. According to an administrative complaint from the Florida Department of Health, an obstetrician/gynecologist was tasked with providing anesthesia for patients undergoing complex surgeries, despite lacking formal credentials in anesthesiology.
The complaint details that Dr. Millicent Muir, whose medical license does not include anesthesiology, was responsible for anesthesia during an operation in October at the facility. The surgery involved liposuction, a Brazilian butt lift, and breast augmentation. During the procedure, the patient, referred to as “J.W.” in the complaint, developed severe bradycardia, a condition where the heart rate slows down considerably and can become life-threatening. J.W. was transferred to the hospital but died later that evening.
Florida law requires that a surgeon be assisted by a qualified anesthesia provider during such significant surgical operations. The Department of Health alleges that this requirement was not met in J.W.’s case, as the chosen staff member lacked the necessary credentials. The complaint marks the beginning of a disciplinary process against the clinic’s office surgery registration license, but does not target Dr. Muir directly.
State records from the Florida Department of Health and corporate filings show a series of address and name changes for the clinic. N’Kaeyah Wilkerson managed Serenity at the time of the patient’s death, while Dr. Dorian Wilkerson is now the managing member. Shareza Wilkerson is listed as the current registered agent.
This is not the first time Dr. Muir has faced disciplinary action. Her medical license was previously restricted following the death of another patient, a new mother, due to delayed care. She was fined and temporarily barred from performing certain procedures and deliveries. The recent complaint has renewed debates regarding safety and regulatory oversight in cosmetic surgeries involving anesthesia providers who may lack proper specialization.
