Consumers in Hong Kong are voicing concerns over misleading promises made by hair loss treatment providers, following a surge in complaints about ineffective procedures and scalp complications. According to the Consumer Council, a total of 67 complaints have been filed since 2023, with patients reporting negative side effects such as painful scalp inflammation, artificial hair loss, and disappointing results despite expensive treatments.
One of the cases highlighted involved a consumer who spent HK$88,000 on Regenera Activa (RGA) hair growth sessions, which claimed to use regenerative cells to stimulate hair follicles and produce visible effects after just one treatment. Although persuaded by a free trial and aggressive marketing, the consumer endured severe bleeding following the first injection and ultimately saw no improvement. Requests for a refund were denied, with the company stating that results vary and cannot be guaranteed, as outlined in the contract.
Another case involved a man who invested HK$170,000 in a hair transplant procedure involving the implantation of artificial hair strands. Despite following post-treatment care instructions, the consumer experienced redness, inflammation, and sores on his scalp, with most of the implanted hair falling out within a year—far short of the advertised claim of lasting over six years. The company attributed the dissatisfaction to the consumer’s alleged failure to regularly use complementary scalp care services, though the complainant argued he was not properly informed about the necessity of follow-up sessions.
The Consumer Council emphasised that service providers must deliver clear information about treatment expectations, timelines, and possible outcomes. Businesses were advised to avoid promises that cannot be backed up and to monitor clients’ progress with consistent aftercare. Consumers were also urged to record their progress and keep all documentation related to the treatments as evidence in case disputes arise.
Signs point to an urgent need for greater transparency and responsible marketing in the hair loss treatment industry. As complaints over marketing claims and poor results continue to grow, regulatory scrutiny is increasing, with authorities encouraging consumers to carefully evaluate both the financial and time commitments before undergoing costly hair treatment services.
