Recent scientific studies have revealed that serum biomarkers, including inflammatory markers and measures of antioxidant capacity, can provide valuable information about health and disease outcomes in both elderly individuals and patients with severe infections. These findings shine a light on how blood tests for specific biological substances may help predict sleep quality in the aging population as well as survival chances in critically ill patients.
One study conducted by Liu and colleagues explored the relationship between inflammation, antioxidant defenses, and sleep quality among elderly adults. The research, published in BMC Geriatrics, shows that high levels of inflammatory proteins such as interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in the blood are linked with poor sleep, including trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. This type of sleep disturbance is common among older adults and can lead to problems like memory loss and higher risk of heart conditions.
The same study also looked at antioxidant capacity in the serum. Antioxidants are substances that protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. The researchers found that lower antioxidant levels were associated with more interrupted sleep and worse sleep efficiency. Together, these results suggest that both increased inflammation and decreased antioxidant protection may contribute to poor sleep among seniors. These biomarkers could help doctors better identify seniors at risk and guide future treatments focusing on inflammation and oxidative stress.
In another investigation, researchers assessed the use of serum ferritin—a blood marker of iron storage and inflammation—and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) to improve predictions for survival in patients admitted to intensive care units with severe infections like sepsis. By adding ferritin and NLR to the widely used Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scoring system, the research showed improved accuracy in predicting 30-day mortality, compared with using SOFA alone. Elevated ferritin and NLR levels were found to signal higher inflammation and worse outcomes. This combined approach is especially valuable in hospitals with limited resources because the tests are simple and not costly.
Both studies highlight how measuring serum biomarkers offers a clearer understanding of an individual’s health status. For elderly people, these measurements could lead to new tools for diagnosing and treating sleep problems. For patients fighting severe infections, adding these blood tests to routine assessments gives a better chance to identify those at greatest risk and optimize their care. As science advances, tracking these molecules in the blood may become a key part of managing chronic conditions and improving patient survival in serious disease situations.
