Consumers seeking smooth, hair-free skin have a wide range of hair removal options to choose from, ranging from affordable home trimmers to expensive laser systems and professional treatments. The market for these devices has seen an increase in scrutiny, however, as advertising claims come under the microscope.
Italy’s competition authority recently launched an investigation into Procter & Gamble, the U.S. consumer goods giant, over advertisements for its Braun Skin i-Expert epilator. Italian regulators are reviewing claims that the device can leave users free of body hair for up to two years, believing such statements may be exaggerated and lacking sufficient proof. In response, Procter & Gamble stated it follows strict advertising standards and ensures all claims are backed by performance data. The company has also expressed willingness to cooperate fully with authorities during the investigation.
For many consumers, cost and comfort are major factors in choosing a hair removal method. Traditional approaches like waxing, threading, and plucking can be painful and may irritate the skin, while more permanent solutions such as laser hair removal offer lasting results but tend to be expensive and out of reach for some people.
A growing number of affordable devices, such as the battery-powered Finishing Touch Flawless facial trimmer, are now widely available. Priced at around £20 and sometimes discounted further through promotions, this device is valued for its ease of use and gentle removal of fine facial hair, often known as “peach fuzz.” Customer reviews highlight its effectiveness, compact design, and ability to leave the skin smooth. However, feedback also shows some users are less impressed, with a few preferring earlier models.
In addition to trimmers, multipurpose hair removal devices that target facial hair, nasal hair, and more, are on the market, as well as at-home laser systems like the Philips Lumea Series 9000. This system, though much pricier at several hundred pounds, promises substantial hair reduction in just a few sessions. Despite the wide variety of products available, consumers are urged to carefully assess product claims and choose methods suited to their needs, skin types, and budgets.
