Study Shows Lower Doxycycline Dose Treats Hair Loss Without Compromising Efficacy

by Shreeya

A recent study has found that lower doses of the antibiotic doxycycline are effective in treating a rare hair loss condition caused by lymphocytic scarring alopecia. This condition occurs when the immune system targets hair follicles, leading to hair loss and scarring.

Traditionally, patients with this condition have been prescribed high doses of doxycycline to prevent further hair loss. However, researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City discovered that lower doses can achieve the same results without causing as many side effects. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

The study analyzed medical records from over 240 men and women treated for lymphocytic scarring alopecia between 2009 and 2023. About 27% of these patients received low doses of doxycycline, while 73% were given higher doses. Researchers found no significant difference in scalp inflammation, hair density, hair diameter, or hairline recession between the two groups.

Patients on lower doses, about 20 milligrams twice a day, experienced fewer side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes compared to those on higher doses of up to 100 milligrams twice a day. Only 12% of those taking lower doses reported side effects, compared to 23% in the high-dose group.

Additionally, people receiving lower doses were more likely to complete their treatment, with only 16% stopping due to digestive issues, whereas 25% in the high-dose group discontinued. Researchers also pointed out that low-dose doxycycline is less likely to harm healthy gut bacteria, providing further benefits for patients. The study offers healthcare providers new options for treating this rare form of hair loss while helping protect patients from unwanted effects and addressing concerns about antibiotic resistance.
