A new study from the University of Pittsburgh suggests a promising approach to weight loss that may allow people to shed unwanted pounds while retaining muscle. Researchers discovered that a drug called an HDAC6 inhibitor helped overweight mice lose up to 50% of their body fat, sparking hope for potential future treatments in humans.

“During the study, one of the important things we observed was that all of the mice were losing fat mass, but they didn’t lose any muscle mass,” said Dr. Isin Cakir, an assistant professor of medicine at Pitt. This is notable because many current obesity treatments result in both fat and muscle loss, which can negatively affect overall health and metabolism.

The research indicates that HDAC6 inhibitors work by interacting with two enzymes that regulate eating behavior. “They are indispensable for their effect to induce weight loss,” Dr. Cakir explained, highlighting the drug’s unique mechanism compared with traditional treatments.

Currently, HDAC6 inhibitors are not available on the market for weight loss. They are being studied in clinical trials for other conditions, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular issues, and muscular dystrophy. Scientists caution that it will take time before these drugs could be safely tested and approved for obesity treatment.

Experts emphasize that while this discovery is promising, it is not a replacement for diet and exercise. Healthy eating habits and regular physical activity remain essential for sustainable weight management, but the findings could open the door to new treatment options for individuals struggling with obesity.

The research team hopes that further studies will confirm the drug’s safety and effectiveness in humans. If successful, this approach could revolutionize weight loss therapies by providing a method that specifically targets fat while preserving muscle, improving both health outcomes and quality of life.
