Trendy hairstyles like slicked-back ponytails, buns, and tight braids may lead to permanent hair loss, a New York City dermatologist has warned.
Dr. Mark Strom explained that while such styles can keep hair out of the face, they can have serious long-term consequences. “Tight hairstyles can cause a permanent form of hair loss called traction alopecia,” he said.
Traction alopecia occurs when hair follicles are subjected to prolonged tension or pulling. Over time, this can cause scarring of the follicles, leaving them unable to grow new hair. While early intervention with topical medications and corticosteroids can sometimes reverse the condition, untreated traction alopecia can result in irreversible hair loss.
“Especially avoid any hairstyle that causes pain or a feeling of tightness,” Dr. Strom advised. “Give your hair a little room to breathe with looser styles.”
Traction alopecia is one of the most common types of hair loss, affecting millions of Americans. It is often linked to hair texture, lifestyle, or certain professions. People with long hair, dancers, gymnasts, and women of African descent—many of whom wear braids or tight hairstyles—are particularly at risk. Research suggests that approximately one-third of U.S. women of African descent may develop the condition.
The hair loss develops gradually as repeated tension loosens the hair shafts, leading to follicle scarring. “It comes from hairstyles like ponytails that are really slicked back or braids tightly against the skin,” Dr. Strom explained in a recent TikTok video.
Treatment options include medications such as minoxidil (Rogaine), biotin supplements, antibiotics, or topical steroids to promote hair growth and address inflammation. However, early detection is crucial. “If you let traction alopecia progress too far, it can become permanent,” Dr. Strom cautioned.
Preventing traction alopecia involves avoiding tight hairstyles and minimizing the use of rubber bands or elastic hair ties, which increase friction and tension. Looser, more relaxed styles allow the scalp and hair follicles to remain healthy.
