Cosmetic surgeons in Bengaluru are reporting a notable rise in women seeking artificial cheek dimples, with procedures costing between ₹45,000 and ₹60,00. The trend, doctors say, is largely fueled by social media beauty standards and celebrity influence.
Plastic surgeons across the city told the publication that most inquiries come from women aged 20 to 40, marking a revival of a trend that peaked over a decade ago. While dimples were once popularized by actors like Preity Zinta, today’s wave draws inspiration from stars such as Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, and Kannada actress Rachita Ram.
“Interest has picked up steadily over the past few years, especially among young women,” said Dr Raghvendra K, consultant plastic surgeon at TriLife Hospital. “Many patients bring celebrity reference images to guide the procedure.”
The procedure, commonly known as dimpleplasty, is performed under local anaesthesia and typically takes one to two hours. Dermatologists report receiving three to four inquiries per month, with consistent demand across private hospitals and cosmetic clinics.
However, doctors caution that the procedure is not without risks. Potential complications include swelling, bruising, temporary numbness, and oral infections, as the incision is made inside the cheek. Poor post-operative oral hygiene can increase the likelihood of infection.
There is also a chance that the dimple may remain visible even when not smiling, despite the intention for it to appear only during facial movements. “Cosmetic procedures cannot replicate another person’s features exactly,” said Dr Venkatesh MS of Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, emphasizing the importance of maintaining realistic expectations.
