Stopping Weight Loss Injections Could Trigger Temporary Hair Loss, Surgeon Warns

by Shreeya

A prominent hair transplant surgeon has cautioned that people who stop taking weight loss injections could experience temporary hair loss. Dr. Aziz Elgindi, of Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics, explained that the shedding is not a direct effect of the medication itself but is linked to rapid weight loss and reduced protein intake. These changes can push hair into a temporary rest-and-shed phase known as telogen effluvium.

“Extra hair fall usually appears two to four months after discontinuing weight loss medications,” Dr. Elgindi said. “It’s not because the drug damages hair, but because rapid weight change, low protein intake, and the sudden shift after stopping the injection can trigger more strands to shed temporarily.”

The hair loss often coincides with sudden shifts in appetite, weight, or blood sugar. For example, someone who stops the injection in January might notice increased shedding on pillows or in brushes by March or April. In some cases, a second “shock shed” may occur if blood sugar or appetite swings abruptly.

Dr. Elgindi reassured patients that regrowth typically begins once nutrition stabilizes and weight settles. “New hairs often start growing within three to six months, with hair thickness generally returning within nine to 12 months. This type of stress-related shedding is temporary and not permanent.”

Individuals most vulnerable to shedding include those who lose weight quickly, follow low-protein diets, or have low iron levels. Even otherwise healthy individuals may experience diffuse hair loss—a thinning across the entire scalp rather than in patches. Short “baby hairs” usually appear first as regrowth begins.

To protect hair while using weight loss injections, Dr. Elgindi recommends maintaining a balanced protein intake of 20–30 grams per meal, incorporating foods such as eggs, fish, chicken, beans, or yogurt. Iron and zinc should be obtained through diet, with supplements considered only if tests indicate a deficiency. Consistent caloric and protein intake can help reduce the stress on hair follicles caused by rapid weight changes.

He also advised seeking medical advice if hair shedding continues for more than six months, if bald patches appear, or if additional symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, or shortness of breath occur. Tests for iron, vitamin B12, and thyroid function may help rule out other causes.
