FDA Approves First Once-Daily Oral GLP‑1 Pill for Obesity, Offering Needle-Free Weight Loss Option

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a once-daily oral GLP‑1 medication from Novo Nordisk designed to help adults reduce excess body weight and maintain long-term weight loss. The approval marks a milestone in obesity care, providing a pill option with weight-loss results comparable to previously available injectable therapies. This new treatment offers a convenient alternative for patients who need medical support for obesity but are hesitant to use needles.

Global data from the OASIS 4 clinical trial demonstrated the pill’s effectiveness, showing that participants lost an average of 16.6% of their starting body weight after roughly one year of consistent use. Remarkably, one in three patients achieved weight loss exceeding 20%, a level associated with meaningful improvements in daily functioning and quality of life. The findings indicate that the oral therapy delivers weight loss comparable to the once-weekly injectable GLP‑1 treatments currently on the market.

Beyond its effects on body weight, the therapy is also approved to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes, in certain patient populations. Clinical evidence indicates roughly a 20% reduction in cardiovascular risk among patients with heart disease who also struggle with overweight or obesity. This positions the therapy as a dual-benefit treatment, addressing both weight management and heart health.

Mike Doustdar, president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, highlighted the significance of the approval. “The pill is here. With this once-daily oral GLP-1 treatment, patients now have a convenient option that can achieve weight loss comparable to injectable therapy,” he said. “No other oral GLP-1 treatment currently matches the results delivered by this therapy, and we are excited about the impact this will have on patients’ lives.”

The development is particularly relevant in Indonesia, where obesity rates have been steadily rising. The 2023 Indonesia Health Survey reported that 23.4% of adults are living with obesity, with 36.8% experiencing central obesity, a key risk factor for chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. The economic burden is also significant, with a 2016 study from Bogor Agricultural University estimating obesity-related losses in Indonesia at tens of billions of rupiah annually due to healthcare costs and productivity impacts.

Sreerekha Sreenivasan, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Indonesia, emphasized the importance of the new therapy in addressing the country’s obesity challenge. “Lifestyle changes alone are often insufficient, and patients deserve access to comprehensive medical support,” she said. “GLP-1 innovations enable the medical community to treat obesity as the serious chronic disease it is—focusing on long-term health outcomes rather than appearance.”

Experts note that obesity is a complex, chronic disease influenced by disrupted hormonal systems regulating hunger and fullness. GLP‑1 therapies mimic natural hormones that signal satiety to the brain, helping patients feel fuller, reduce food intake, and achieve gradual, sustainable weight loss.

Novo Nordisk’s oral GLP‑1 pill is expected to reach the U.S. market in early January 2026. The company encourages patients with obesity, abdominal obesity, or related health conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, to consult healthcare professionals for comprehensive assessment and treatment planning. More information on obesity, health risks, and evidence-based treatments is available through NovoCare.id, an educational platform providing accessible guidance on modern therapies like GLP‑1.

The GLP‑1 treatment is a prescription medicine used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults with obesity or overweight. Clinical studies show it can help patients achieve substantial weight loss while improving heart and metabolic health markers, offering a holistic approach to managing obesity and related conditions.
